historic buildings of Wels

wels-sparkasse_150dpi

As far back as the roman empire, Wels was an established settlement. Its rich history continued through the middle ages and the renaissance up to more modern times. The old Sparkasse in this picture, was built in 1904 and after its original use as a bank, housed the archeological findings documenting Wels’ history. Another site of more recent history is the Maria-Theresien highrise in the back. This 24 storey building was a prestige project of the 1960s and is now overdue for costly renovation. Most think its an eyesore now, but it certainly is a symbol of its time.
